In one of the deadliest escalations in recent months, Israel carried out a powerful overnight airstrike campaign across multiple areas of the Gaza Strip, leaving at least 54 Palestinians dead and more than 80 injured, according to local health officials.

The air raids, which began late Tuesday night and continued into the early hours of Wednesday, targeted what the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) described as “strategic Hamas infrastructure” including weapons depots, underground tunnels, and command centers.

The attack follows a sharp spike in cross-border violence after Hamas militants allegedly launched a rocket barrage toward southern Israel earlier this week, injuring two civilians in the city of Ashkelon.

“Our response is aimed at dismantling terror capabilities and preventing future attacks on Israeli civilians,” said IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari during a press briefing.

Eyewitnesses in Gaza described chaotic scenes as residential areas near the supposed targets were rocked by explosions. Ambulances struggled to reach affected neighborhoods amid debris and collapsed buildings.

“I was asleep with my children when the entire building shook,” said Hana Al-Sabbah, a mother of three in central Gaza. “We ran out with nothing but the clothes on our backs.”

Palestinian leaders strongly condemned the strikes, calling them a “flagrant violation of international law.” They also accused Israel of using collective punishment against civilians.

Both sides rejected the latest ceasefire deal. Fighting has continued, drawing sharp criticism from global organisations and human rights groups.

Aid agencies are urging calm and demanding protection for innocent civilians caught in the conflict.

Meanwhile, international reactions remain divided. The United States supports Israel’s right to self-defense but has raised concerns about civilian casualties. On the other hand, Turkey and several Arab nations have condemned Israel’s actions and are pushing for urgent global intervention.
