What started as heavy rainfall turned into a nightmare for the people of Ajmer, Rajasthan, as the iconic Ana Sagar Lake overflowed for the first time in over a decade. Water rushed into low-lying areas, submerging streets, homes, and temples, and forcing hundreds to evacuate

🌊 Ana Sagar Breaches Limit

Built in the 12th century, Ana Sagar Lake is known as the lifeline of Ajmer. On July 19, after incessant rains battered the region for more than 36 hours, the lake crossed its capacity. The water breached into adjoining areas such as Vaishali Nagar, Chaupati, and parts of the Dargah vicinity.

Officials estimate that over 800 houses have been directly impacted, while several schools and marketplaces are submerged.

🚨 Chaos, Displacement & Emergency

“We were asleep when water gushed into our home at 3 AM. We barely escaped with our kids,” said local resident Sultana Bano, whose house near Ramganj was completely flooded.

The district administration issued an orange alert and launched evacuation operations with the help of disaster response teams. As of now:

  • More than 1,500 people have been relocated to relief camps.
  • Several cattle, autos, and motorcycles have been swept away.
  • Drinking water pipelines are contaminated in at least 5 wards.
  • 12 trains from Ajmer Junction were cancelled or rerouted.

🌾 Crops and Economy Take a Hit

Ajmer’s outskirts, known for cultivating millet, groundnut, and pulses, have witnessed severe crop damage. According to preliminary estimates by the Agriculture Department:

  • Over 1,200 hectares of farmland are underwater.
  • Farmers may face losses of ₹8–10 crores in a single week.
  • The mandi (wholesale market) remains closed indefinitely.

Local traders are concerned about rising vegetable and dairy prices due to blocked transport routes.

🛑 What Needs to Change

This disaster raises urgent questions:

  • Why wasn’t the lake’s capacity reviewed post-monsoon forecasts?
  • Is Ajmer’s drainage system prepared for modern urban pressures?
  • What are the long-term plans for flood management?

Climate experts warn that urban flooding in Rajasthan is no longer rare, and state authorities must act now.

🔚 Conclusion

Ajmer is no stranger to resilience — but this flood has exposed the city’s vulnerabilities. From children losing schoolbooks to elderly residents being carried out on stretchers, the human cost is undeniable.

As the waters recede, it’s not just a clean-up that’s needed — it’s a rethink of how we manage heritage, water, and humanity.
